You will need the following supplies:

1. Fabric Glue

2. Skin-Bond adhesive (available at at medical supplies and some pet supply companies)

3. Tweezers or hemostats to pull hair out of dog's ears & ear cleaner to clean ear canal.

4. Clippers with a #40 and a #10 or #15 blade.

First, Shave the ears on the OUTSIDE with the #40 blade. Shave the inside with the #10 or #15. (You must leave SOME hair in order for the glue to stick properly. Be CAREFUL along the outside rim of the inside of the ear. There are delicate folds of skin which can be clipper nicked seriously if you run the clipper against them the wrong way!

Second, Clip the dog's head with the #10 or #15 blade with the grain from behind the eyebrows all the way up to just behind the earset. Make sure you also clip around the base of the ears and get the cheeks clipped with the #15 blade also.

Pluck all long hairs from inside the dogs ears; then wait a couple of days & use the ear cleaner. If you use alcohol or ear cleaner on a freshly plucked ear, it can irritate the dog to the point where he scraches his ears and then all this work will be lost! If you find any evidence of ear mites or infection (brown discharge) when cleaning the ears, take care of this & get it cleared up before going any further.

Now. You are ready to start the actual ear setting process.

Open the tincture of benzoin and apply it to the inside flap of the ear; in the same area where the below diagram shows you to put the glue. Allow a few minutes, then apply the glue as shown below. The glue comes with a brush so you just paint it on. Be sure NOT to put the glue down into the ear canal!

Fold the ear downwards & press the corner pointing towards the inner corner of the dogs eye. Leave about 1/4 inch of ear above the top of the head & make sure that line is absolutely straight. The glue dries fast so you may not be able to make but a couple of adjustments.

Repeat the process with the other ear & remember to MAKE SURE both ears look exactly the same when finished.

Leave the ears up in this manner until the hair between head & ear grows long enough for you to clip (usually 2-4 weeks depending on how fast your dog's coat grows.) Check how they look. If they are a little "high Flying" don't leave so much over the top of the head. If they are two low, leave more over the top of the head as you RE-SET the ears. Sometimes its good to give a young dog a break of 2-3 days between settings.

AGE: Puppies ears should begin to be set BEFORE the teething period begins. Once teething has started -- KEEP THEM GLUED at all times.
